Right... back when you were a reefer I think LED's would have sent you over the edge.

Nothing yet, just brainstorming and speculation. I'll have pics up when things get going. :)

B, what's going on man? Long time no read.

This tank is still sitting empty in my spare bedroom downstairs and will likely stay that way for a while. I got my wife pregnant again so extra cash isn't something I really have at the moment, lol.

What have you been up to? Still got the reef tank up?

DUDE CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I am sure this tank will get up off the ground eventually, and will be the standard here on Ofish for SW aquariums. Have you made any other hypothetical plans for the tank (dream equipment, stocking, etc?)

Sadly I had to take my tank down, even after getting the sweet light. I just didn't have the time or the money to maintain it. I got more involved in a research lab here in Kansas and started spending large amounts of time away from home. I have people that can feed my cat, but I trust no one to mess with my reef tank. I still have the perpetual itch to set it back up though. I already have the light, so why not right?

Thanks B. I really don't know where I sit with the reef. I think about it a lot but it's just really not feasible at this point and time in my life. I'm busy enough with my son who is nearly three now and we'll have a little girl in april... Man I'm worried about being able to maintain the tanks I have now! Lol. My 'high tech' planted tank is suffering because I have trouble doing the daily things - dosing, trimming, keeping up with the algae, etc. I know I wouldn't be able to handle a full blown reef.

But I still think about it for sure.

I'm still pretty curious about the Reefbreeders LED fixtures. They seem pretty legit for the price. I still am thinking about employing Dr Tims NP active pearls to control nitrate/phosphates. A really nice Reefoctopus in sump skimmer, and either the SCWD or the koralia alternating wave makers. Love to get back into my LPS - Candy canes, trumpets, Frogs, Hammers, Acans... man I miss my acans... I'd even like to try some of the SPS - birds nest, digis, monti caps, you know easy stuff.

But it will all have to wait. Alas...

I've changed the title of this thread to reflect exactly what I think about it at times. Will it happen? Or will it sit empty until I sell it? I'm not sure. A few things that are swaying me towards starting it back up certainly loom in the forefront of my mind however. First, Lighting is all of a sudden much more affordable. X light fixture that cost 4-450 bucks can now be had at half the price. (Keep in mind that I have been without a salt tank for nearly 5 years now) My brother has also kept in contact with a few friends that have nice reef tanks, and one of his friends is selling me a massive skimmer at less than half the retail price - a steal if there ever was one. (Super Reef Octopus 1000SS). These two items alone would nearly top out at 6-8 hundred dollars 5 years ago, and today, I could (and may) have them for under 4. Incredible. Still there are things that I would have to update and buy new as some of my old equipment has been sitting around unused for a long time. I'm not trying to convince myself that getting back in would be cheap. I'm not that young anymore. But it does tip the scales in favor of dipping a toe back in.

Second, my solo male H. carpintis. An absolutely beautiful specimen. Less than two years old and 8ish inches? Probably top out around 9-9.5 I'm guessing. Great color, nice thick solid male profile. Just sits there all day. Maybe I just thought a solo fish would be more entertaining, or maybe I'm comparing it unfairly to that of my two previous Oscars, but I've just completely become disenchanted with this tank setup in general. I'd be much happier with him in 125/180g setup with some other aggressive/semi-aggressive fish. Solo, he's just not that interesting to me. I find myself turning on the tank, feeding him and walking away. I could foreseeably take this tank down, my 20H (which contains 20-25 juvenile G. orangehead Tapajos), and the 46 bow (which really has a myriad of nothing in it anyway- some bristlenose babies, guppies, and other tetras) down leaving me with the 125g community and a 40 breeder salt tank. Much more chewable as far as maintenance is concerned...

The other limiting factor that I was competing with before was time. I certainly don't have a whole lot more time now than I did back then, but I would say that by comparison I am better at managing my time. Parenting has become less of a panic and react type of process and is more of a react accordingly type of process. For example - a blow out diaper on my son was the equivalent of the world ending 4 1/2 years ago. We would both be panicking and yelling at one another to 'get more wipes, more wipes!' and today, one of us can handle it by ourselves for the most part. We've just caught up to the learning curve of having little ones. I would say that by comparison, my daughter is 150% more independent than my son was as well. She's not even two, and is nearly potty trained without our efforts. My son we had to fight tooth and nail, follow him around constantly for like 4 days non stop when he was 3 to get him to even use the toilet for the first time. It's just worlds different between the two. Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that parenting is just less overwhelming at this point in time vs when my son was young. If I cut down on my other tanks, I think a salt tank, possibly even a reef tank would be manageable. If I took down the 125g, I could go full blown reef, apex controller, do some SPS, and maybe a frag tank etc, but I'm just now willing to cut down that much.

So will the scale tip one way or another? Stay tuned I guess... Lol.

Rush, I'm still laughing at the "blow out" comment. Man I don't miss that. My youngest is 5 now. How many tanks do you have up and running currently?
