My son just got his very first Oscar, a beautiful Albino Oscar! The Oscar is doing well, swimming around a little, exploring. We just can’t seem to get him to come to the surface to eat at all. We did drop a sinking shrimp pellet in just to make sure he would eat, and he ate it right away. Any suggestions on how to get him to come to the surface to eat his floating pellets? I don’t think it would be good to keep feeding him sinking pellets because we have sand and don’t think it would be good for him to possibly suck up sand every time he eats.

I suspect the fish will be coming to the surface for food in no time.
They typically have a shy period that usually wears off in a week or 2.
My fish hoover food off the sand all the time and show no ill effects.

Do you know how long your pellets will float? If they float for a long time, an idea to help him learn that's how to get food is to just leave a few floating. He'll eventually investigate, put a pellet in his mouth and realize it's food.

No worrys about the Sand thing. The fish able by himself to spit Sand out if the eats it with his pellets.

Young Oscars are typical shy if they are alone bit this will change with time and enough safe spots where he feel convertable and can hide.

Another thing is that Albino fish have by nature bad eye sight. He maybe feel more confortable with lights off or with very low light

Thanks for the responses! Took the advice and turned the light off and he is moving around a lot more. Actually got him to come to the top to eat a live wax worm so I think he will come around to the pellets. I’m going to try to leave some pellets floating around as suggested.

He still hasn’t eaten any of the pellets that I put in. How often can he eat the wax worms? I don’t want to over feed him and have him constipated.

Constipation won't be a huge issue if you can get him on a varied diet. If he is eating the wax worms and refusing the pellets, he's just being stubborn. Stop offering the worms. Only offer pellet food. If he turns it down, after 3-5 minutes just scoop the pellets back out of the tank and toss them. Repeat daily until he starts taking the pellets. Be warned, Oscars are stubborn and can go without food for weeks. You may be doing this for a while depending on how stubborn your Oscar is.
