If I used something like this www.amazon.com/Aquatic-Life-Changing-Dei...6SD4F3JTBMQTSXT&th=1
Would it prevent the need to use chemicals like aquasafe etc?

Do they help with general hardness (gh) and ph?

RO units remove everything. So you won't have any dissolvable solids at all. You won't have any chlorine or chloramine, so you wouldn't need to use a dechlorinator, but you would also have no trace elements. KH and GH would be 0 which would mean you would have no buffer for pH fluctuation at all. Unless you plan to add a stabilizer to the RO water, or are attempting to reduce unmanageable nitrate from your tap water, I don't recommend using a RO unit.

I there a big picture to your question Oscarmom? or are you simply trying to eliminate the need for treating your water before/during water changes?

ohern4ever, not really a big picture... It's just that I've heard of them and wanted to know what they did.

Explanations on this site are easier to understand in some cases.
