Carbon and Drip system

Postby Farmer » Sun Jul 22, 2012 2:50 pm

I was reading about carbon and read that most of you dont use it. I've always used it but I hate changing it. I have a marine land C-360. I was wondering what i should put in place of the carbon. I run everything else it says to run in it.

I'm also thinking of putting a drip system on my tank. Was wondering how much water i should be replacing a day or if thats up to whatever i want? Should i still do water cleanings weakly with that?

I had a C 360 for a bit, it broke and I replaced it with my Eheim 2217.
They are good filters, I replaced the carbon with ehfilav in mine.

There isn't really a good 'replacement' for carbon - and by that I mean another substance that can easily remove heavy metals, medications and toxins that is cheap and readily available. If you are looking for a replacement for carbon, I think that chemipure and purigen are toted to do similar things, but are expensive and need to be monitored closely.

If you are simply looking for something to fill the chamber with, then I recommend Seachem Matrix. I have 200 liters of matrix between each of my C360's. 8-)

My recommended media for a C-360

Tray 1 (Lowest Tray) = Stock sponges.
Tray 2 = Eheim Ehfilav (although if you don't want to spend the $10, you can use the stock biomedia here, but if using the stock ceramic rings, I would place them into tray 1 with the sponges in tray 2)
Tray 3 = Quality Biomedia (Biomax Rings, Eheim Ehfisubstrate Pro, Matrix, etc...)
Tray 4 = Quality Biomedia (Biomax Rings, Eheim Ehfisubstrate Pro, Matrix, etc...)

The stock ceramic rings do better as mechanical media to capture large debris, much like Eheim Ehfimech in the Eheim classics. They are pretty poor are biomedia.

As for a "drip" system. How much really depends on your nitrate creep. The object of a drip system is to keep nitrates at basically undetectable levels. I would start off low and work my way up.
