I highly recommend this product. It was a good "find".

I was familiar with the Aquatrol line from back in the day but its availability was limited. I was not aware of Zoo Med's purchase of Aquatrol until informed of it by my LFS, who is fanatical about his food selections and recommendations. Zoo Med is making this food widely available. While it's not on the shelf at Petco or Petsmart (yet), it's only a matter of time and online Vendors are already offering it, as will quality Mom and Pop LFS's.

My opinion of this food has not changed. It has become my flake of choice for all tanks. I've even ordered and starting using the other Zoo Med foods as well (Brine Shrimp Flake, Plankton Flake, and Earthworm Flake). I'll need to get reviews on those published on those as well.

I've also received confirmation from Zoo Meds that their aquatic line of foods is Ethoxyquin free, using Salmon Meal from Alaskan Salmon. All of their ingredients are from the USA.

I recently discovered that my favorite veggie food contains Ethoxyquin. I feel like I've been giving Marlboros to my fish. Finding food without this pesticide narrows your options. Fortunately some of those options are very good.

What's the deal with spirulina and why do I keep reading about it? I was laboring under the misapprehension that it's like salad for fish. Not quite. The article link in Kmuda's review is an eye opener.

Evidence as recent as late 2007 shows even more proof as to the profound anti-oxidant properties of Spirulina. ... In scientific studies of mice, hamsters, chickens, turkeys, cats and fish, Spirulina consistently improves immune system function. ... it actually enhances the animal’s body’s ability to generate new blood cells. THIS REASON ALONE is why Spirulina should be part of EVERY fish’ aquatic diet, INCLUDING carnivores ... It is possible to have a staple fish food that has its primary ingredient as spirulina algae and be an effective diet for most fish. ... You need a food that is 10-20% spirulina to obtain these benefits. http://www.americanaquariumproducts.com/SpirulinaAlgae.html

The question isn't why should my fish eat it, it's Why shouldn't I? (Maybe I'll try a pinch, Skoal-like. ) Spirulina 20 meets the 20% requirement. It even meets my JD's exacting standards. A spoiled fish, he can't normally be bothered to go to the surface for anything smaller than a pellet. He makes an exception for Spirulina 20. They also make sinking sticks with the same ingredients.
