overpopulation issue solved

well as some of you know I had 5 6 inch oscars in a 75 gallon tank i was stubborn about keeping all of them till i moved in april...Well to make a long story short i was at 20 to 30 percent water changes daily to keep the nitrates under 20 so I gave up and traded my two red oscars for a master test kit to my local fish store guy so I got three oscars in my 75 gallon with a fluval 406 and a fluval 305 both running on it the 305 is packed full with biomax farming bacteria for my new tank and filter for the remaining three shown here...






125 gallon with stand lids and coralife 10k lighting, a Fluval FX5 filter, a 25 ft python and some other odds and ends for 400 bucks

gonna run the FX5 and a rena filstar xp3 or an eheim 2217 (havent decided which one i want to buy yet...gonna keep 406 on my 75 i have now and kick my 305 down to the 55 gallon i bought for my girlfriends electric blue dempsey

and for the 75 when i move i plan to get one peacock bass or jaquar cichlid

I would watch out for aggression issues having just three Oscars. 2 will gang up on one eventually. trade 1 more in for some dither fish for the 125.

i thought of that myself but these three get along pretty well a little square off every now and again but nothing serious... i chose to get rid of the reds because every fight in that tank with all 5 in it involved one of them, i plan to hold off buying the peacock bass until im sure things are good in the new tank with the three if i feel one has to go ill throw the lutino in the vacated 75 im moving sooner than planned in three weeks so everything will be going soon after so ill have all three tanks going with one empty or maybe throw some feeder fish in the empty one to keep it cycled and ready for a fish

I'd hold off indefinitely on the Pbass. A 75g isn't even close to big enough for a single Pbass.

I'd just dose with ammonia. No detritus means no hidden ammonia factories.

feeder fish is the best option to cycle a fish tank if you are looking for trouble, when i say trouble i mean diseases... feeder fish are often kept in very bad conditions and develop diseases, i would never use feeder fish to cycle a tank, better to use Bio media from stablished tank or use those products that say have bacteria in a bottle. I had excelent results with Prodac Nitridac...

Watch out for peacock basses they get huge! eat a lot and produce mass bioload!! i know these personaly since i use to fish them down here in Brazil, they get Huuuuge!

Congrats on the tank upgrade. Keep in mind three oscars will have that 125 maxed out and a little over stocked. Not near as bad as a 75 with 5 though. You should be a master at water changes so I think you should be good.

Yeah ive become pretty pretty good at water changes LOL but since those two reds arent in the tank anymore i havent had to do one since monday lol nitrates are still about 15ppm so ill do one tomorrow small one maybe 15 gallons should do the trick...

the feeder fish thing was just something i was throwing around for the 75 gallon i do trust where i get my feeder fish and earthworms from he has a very clean setup and i can even go in the back and net them myself but i may not have to do anything really i got my 406 and 305 stuffed with 6 boxes of biomax and two boxes of prefilter ready for this move.. I figured 2 boxes per tray on the fx5 for two trays and another two for the new canister im getting to go with the fx5 which should fill up another tray, then ill just run ammonia remover and clearmax for the other remaining trays everything should be good im thinking...

as far as the peacock bass goes i know they get huge as heck ive watched fishing shows where they catch 40 pounds and bigger i did want one because the site i was looking at recommended a 75 gallon tank for one of them and i was thinking of raising one till he hit 12-16 inches and then selling him to my lfs he said hed give me 100 bucks if i raised one to that size for him but on second thought i may just get two jaguar cichlids for it...not sure yet..but i plan to wait on doing anything for a few weeks till i make sure the three stooges get along lol so far so good on that
