OSCAR.....Bloated/Floating upside down

Postby Jchin24 » Sun Aug 14, 2005 10:21 pm

I have two about 9" Oscars one red and one Tiger. I have them in a 55 gallon(spare me the lecture) with an aquaclear 500 and aquaclear 200. I have an airstone in there already.

I came back from work today only to see my Red Oscar's Belly very big so I did a check online to see what it was. I read that it can be constipation, bacterial infection and amongst other things.

I checked on him just now though, and now he is floating upside down. So there is no way I can feed him a pea right? Is there any other things I should do for my oscar....I've had them for about 4 years already, don't want to lose him.

What are your water parameters? You might as well start off doing a pretty big water change. Have you noticed any differences in behavior minus the floating upside down part? Is his breathing labored? Can you take a picture? If he is still eating normal pellets there is a chance you could slip him a pea, though if he is floating upside down I don't know that would be constipation, but you never know. Test your water, post your results and do a fairly big water change. It might be too late for the one but at least you might be able to save the second if we can't help you save the first. How long has he been doing this?

I'm guessing it's some kind of bladder problem. Are the scales sticking out? It could be dropsy too.

What worked for me was putting a crystal of epsom salt in a pea and feeding the fish. I also lowered the level of water in the tank by about a third. ( don't ask).

IMHO if your oscar is floating upside down its probably to late, but just try putting aqaurium salt in, and raising the temperature,. then go get the meds from your petstore, for probably sometype of bladder infection. thats really all you can do. GOOD LUCK though! hope your oscar makes it!
