Well I am taking the dive into reef keeping yet again.

For the last few years I have been moving frequently, and was unable to get a tank up and running, however, now I will be in one place for a little while longer, so the gf and I have decided to give a reef tank a try.

Unfortunately, I am on the third floor of an apartment complex, so doing a large tank is out of the question. Instead, we got an Innovative Marine 10 gallon fusion. We set it up a couple of nights ago, and this thing is awesome! Excellent dimensions and the fact that it is an all-in-one (AIO) is fantastic. I ordered a Hydor Koralia 240 powerhead, a proper refractometer (used a hydrometer last time around; still have it though), and some Agrilive Black Hawaiian sand. I had some rock from previous tanks, my Kessil 350, a small heater, and my trusty API saltwater masterkit.

I tested water parameters today, and my ammonia is sitting around 1.0 ppm, and nitrites are around 0.5 ppm. I didn't bother testing the nitrates giving ammonia was still in the water, and that is the bigger concern. pH is sitting around 8.0 and salinity is 1.025.

As far as stocking goes, I think we are going to avoid doing any fish for the time being, and stick to simple corals and maybe a couple fun inverts. All of this is still up in the air though (except for the no fish part).

Awesome man. Looks great. Isn't the kessil a little over kill for that size tank though? Not that I would know... what are PAR readings for that thing?

Also what are you thinking for corals?

Yeah the 350 is overkill, but I already had it and I didn't want to buy another LED fixture. It has some really nice control knobs on the top though, so I can tune back the intensity if I need to.

As for stocking, definitely zoos (gf) wants to do a garden, Probably do some big fleshy LPS corals (think trumpets and candycanes) and maybe a tiny clam way way way down the line. Also, I want to get some of the maxi-mini carpet anemones at some point in time, and pair it with some sexy shrimp.

Awesome dude. I've always wanted to try a zoo garden. Would be badass. So what's first then? Should be cycled in a week or two... Zoos to start?

liveaquaria has some polyp packs that have gotten really good reviews... but you don't get to specify what you want. A bit of a gamble there but might be worth a shot.

Just tested the water and we have nitrates  , but ammonia is still at 2ppm and nitrites at ~1.0 ppm.

Definitely going to start with a zoo garden. The gf and I have been looking at the pack on liveaquaria. Definitely a good place to start. We also have a few LFS that have nice coral selections, so it will be worth looking there too.

Tank is moving along slowly. Ammonia has peaked and started to decline, nitrites have leveled off, and nitrates are accumulating. Oddly, because I didn't seed with live rock or anything there is no algae in the tank  Makes me a little worried, but maybe the flow is high enough to prevent it.

Hoping to get out to the LFS this weekend the nitrites and ammonia go to zero. Maybe pick up some LR to seed the tank, and a zoa or two.

If you're talking cyano, it will come later. I seem to remember mine peaking around 2-3 months in. I had several corals at the time and fighting that stuff was a pain. Otherwise in general I'd say its still just early.

Definitely snap pics if you grab some zoas!
