Hmm. I have some drool worthy tanks that my company works on...

This one in particular. 250 gallon that's been running for like 10 years. This tank has more computer parts on it than you can imagine. It alerts you to leaks, alternates the power heads to simulate ocean flow, it's pretty intense.

This one is like a 48 gallon we do as well:

I used to have a reef tank. It was a beautiful tank, had coralline algae like Lilly's tank, corals growing not just surviving.

Then I got burnt out on it. Was much more work than a FW tank. Needed to use RO water, almost daily tank maintenance. Its not the kind of tank
you can do on the cheap. Everything is $$$ to do it right. I gave the tank to my brother who is a HS science teacher. Tank is still running in his classroom. School pays for the electricity and all the expensive add ons( chiller, RO system). Looks great

FW is so much more relaxing, IMO. I do admit to dreaming about running a nice reef setup and I love looking at other peoples Reefs

Changed up the look of the 16g bow a little bit.

I'll agree that initial costs are substantially more. However I do believe that you can find a nice balance if you are careful in choosing what you keep. For example the 16g bowfront above is fairly easy to maintain. It's a low tech setup - no skimmer, a small LED unit (Marineland Reef capable 18 inch fixture), no sump or other filters or reactors. I do have a RODI unit but I only do a water change every other week. Since the tank volume is roughly 14 gallons a 5g water change is about 30%. I have two clowfish and a coral banded shrimp. The corals don't grow out of control because the light I have isn't massively intense, but as a trade off the algae is fairly easy to control as well... I find my little reef tank just as peaceful as my 125g cichlid tank.
