Like Northstar, I've used a wide variety of substrates, from pea gravel , white "marble chips" (not really marble), to sand, fortified plant substrates or store bought gravel.

My favorite for large fish that drop huge turds is a mix of black and natural gravel. Mostly black, with some natural mixed in. It hides the debris between gravel vacs. I don't go over in an inch or two with depth. Makes it easier to gravel vac.

My favorite substrate for my tanks with plants or community tanks is a very fine grained natural gravel. National Geographic brand from PetSmart is a nice one.
