I know they prefer a substrate, but anyone keeping them in a bare bottom? Would I expect issues if I tried?

Substrate is prefered because it's there natural way to feed. They vac in, filter fine gained Sand from food and spit it out.

You can get by without a substrate, but I wouldn't recommend it for this particular species. They can be somewhat finicky and delicate and you want them to feel comfortable.
