The primary ingredient is fish meal. We have no way of measuring the quality and nutritional value of the meal being used as the source is unknown and suspected of containing Ethoxyquin. As a result, the quality and subsequent nutritional values are questionable. Use of fish meal, instead of “whole fish meal” potentially indicates the primary ingredients are fish processing leftovers (scales, skin, bones, and internal organs) deemed unsuitable for human consumption.

Fish Protein Concentrate, in theory, should be a higher quality ingredient than Fish Meal as it is manufactured from fresher source product under more hygienic conditions.

The 3rd listed ingredient is Dried Kelp. Kelp is large seaweed in the brown algae family that is a good source of iodine for thyroid function and chlorophyll. It’s also a good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin C, Pantothenic Acid, Zinc, Copper, Riboflavin, Folate, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium and Manganese. Kelp is a very good natural source of Vitamin K.

Dried Spirulina Algae is a preferred ingredient, providing a natural source of vitamins and minerals. Spirulina, specifically, is rich in raw protein and seven major vitamins: A1, B1, B2, B6, B12 (one of the best natural sources for B12, although the bioavailability of its B12 is in dispute by many researchers), C and E. It naturally contains beta-carotene, color enhancing pigments, and a whole range of minerals. In addition, Spirulina has a 62% amino acid content and contains all essential fatty acids and eight amino acids required for complete nutrition.

Inclusion of Krill and Daphnia, even at the 5thn ann 6th listed ingredients, are appreciated. Both will provide fiber and enhance red coloring.

Subsequent green vegetables are basically listed too far down in the ingredient list to contribute significantly to the overall nutritional value.

Salmon oil is preferred over standard “Fish Oil” as it is a known entity, high in Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. Unfortunately, the salmon oil utilized in this food is preserved with Ethoxyquin.

With each of the first five ingredients being preferred protein sources and with two of those being quality preferred plant proteins, there is ample confidence in the preferred protein content of this food.

The listing of vitamin and mineral supplements is acceptable.

Use of the prebiotic Fructooligosaccharide (FOS) is appreciated. FOS are plant sugars that occur in a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and cereals. They are produced commercially by partial hydrolysis of chicory inulin (an oligosaccharide found in chicory root), or from sucrose (sugar) using an enzymatic process. In addition to improving the digestibility of various food components, FOS may also improve absorption of dietary calcium, iron, and other important minerals.

While this food does not contain artificial colors or synthetic vitamin K, it does contain Ethoxyquin, at least, to preserve the Salmon Oil. It is less clear if additional Ethoxyquin is contained within the meal products utilzed but it can be safely assumed.

The preferred protein content of this food, including the extensive use of preferred plant proteins and the high concentration of Kelp and Spirulina, combined with an absence of artificial colors and synthetic vitamin K (K3) would otherwise rate this as a 5 star food. However, use of Ethoxyquin and the potential marginal quality of the primary meal utilized prevents rating any higher.

This is not a review of this fish food. It is an attempt to analyze the ingredients, rating them from 1 (worst) to 6 (best) in an effort to judge quality based upon three simple criteria.

  1. Absence of toxic, potentially toxic, and controversial ingredients
  2. Aquatic Animal protein and Preferred Plant Proteins as the primary protein sources
  3. A fully nutritious food to include necessary vitamins and minerals with natural sources of vitamins and minerals being preferred.

These basic concepts apply:

  • Any food that utilizes Ethoxyquin, BHA, or BHT as preservatives, cannot rate higher than a 4 star food.
  • Use of artificial colors prevents rating higher than a 4 star food.
